Game Of Thrones Season 5 Review
Game Of Thrones Season 5, is finally back for its fifth season, and after all the chaos of last year, it’s settling into a more logical rhythm this time around. Some of the show’s finest set pieces are sandwiched between episodes that are slower paced and more political in nature. One of the best parts of this season is the showdown between Hardhorne and the villains, which leads to a chaotic climax and dire future ramifications.
Following closely in the footsteps of the source material, this season will focus on three interconnected stories: Arya’s adventures in Braavos, the Sparrows’ ascent to power in King’s Landing, and Daenarys’ ongoing fight to keep the peace across the Narrow Sea. In the first, Arya is admitted into The House of Black and White by Jaqen H’ghar and begins her training to become a face-changing assassin. Because of this, she begins to doubt everything she has ever been taught, and whether or not she will continue working at the House is left up in the air.
Meanwhile, the Lannisters in King’s Landing are having a lot of trouble due to the Sparrow’s religion still being active there. Eventually, the High Sparrow and the cult impose their influence by locking up Margarey Tyrell and then Cersei herself in jail, tipping numerous scales in their favour. Despite dragging on a little longer than necessary, this plot successfully demonstrates Tommen’s helplessness as king of the Seven Kingdoms.
After successfully sacking Mance Rayder’s camp, Stannis has returned to the north to prepare his army. Stannis, seeing an opportunity to assert his power in the North, attempts in vain to enlist Tormund and the Wildlings on his side by offering them territory south of the wall. This is where Jon Snow comes in. This motivates him to go to Hardhorne in search of the Wildling horde, so that he may add them to Stannis’ army.
But the Boltons have other plans, and when Ramsay marries Sansa, he travels north to try to undermine Stannis’ army. As a result, he makes a hasty judgement about the Lord of Light, which ultimately leads to the downfall of his cause and leaves him at the mercy of the Boltons’ army.
After many episodes in which Jon Snow is established as Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, the story takes one more unexpected turn before the season finale. In a midnight ambush, Jon witnesses the betrayal of his brothers. Season 5 finishes with major plot holes when they repeatedly knife him and leave him for dead, and the White Walkers pose a much greater danger than before.
There aren’t many dramatic battles or action set pieces this season, but the look into Westeros’s many religions is fascinating nevertheless. From the High Sparrow’s ascent to power to his followers’ growing doubts about the Lord of Light, this season is propelled by some fascinating thematic work.
The set design and visual effects are top-notch, as they have been in previous seasons, and truly assist to bring Westeros to life on screen. There is plenty here to make for an exciting watch, despite the slower tempo and the season being somewhat overshadowed by what has gone before.
