Spell 2020 Movie Review
Spell 2020 is a film that has a lot of the same vibe as the movie Misery, but the creepiness level is turned up to ten thousand. It is sluggish to start, but then it picks up and becomes really, really amazing.
To get a sense of the kind of atmosphere you might expect to find in Spell, all you have to do is read the synopsis or watch the movie’s trailer. Due to the fact that Misery is one of my all-time favourite films, I approached this one with some degree of circumspect optimism. Would it be distinct enough from the other that I could keep them separate in my head and still value both of them? In short, the answer is “yes.”
The beginning of Spell is really uninteresting, which is something I can appreciate. I’m used to the fact that the beginning of thriller movies drag on for a while, so I wasn’t frustrated by it. But after about twenty minutes, it starts to get very amazing, and it gets incredibly spooky, and I am totally here for it.
At first, Marquis and his family are required to go on a trip in order to attend the burial of his father. The plane goes down while he is in control of it. When he comes to, he is bewildered and has no idea where he is, and his family is nowhere to be seen. He is currently being cared for and bandaged by an elderly couple who may or may not be his grandparents. Eloise, the elderly lady, should inform him that she has constructed a Boogity of him out of his BLOOD AND SKIN, and that it will assist him in recovering in time for the rise of the blood moon.
You did read that sentence correctly. This woman built a doll out of this man by using his blood, skin, and other body fluids, which she stated but I will not go into detail about here. In other words, regardless of how badly I was harmed at the time, I would have immediately fled the scene. And as if all of that weren’t disturbing enough, the creepiness factor has continued to skyrocket ever since the Boogity was introduced. I don’t want to spoil anything, but there is some soup, there is a railroad spike, and there are so many other things that gave me the creeps.
The performance of each and every actor in Spell is quite good. Because of this, a significant portion of the picture rests squarely on the shoulders of Omari Hardwick and Loretta Devine, and the two of them handle the load quite well. The connection that they have on film is so intense it will give you chills! It’s the cast that makes or breaks a film like this one, which is why you can trust me when I say that Spell is elevated to greatness by the performances of Hardwick and Devine.
From around the midway on, I was on the very edge of my seat for the entirety of this film. And despite the fact that I had a general idea of what was going to take place, there were still several unexpected turns that caught me off guard. The final fifteen minutes are the ones that merit a chef’s kiss since they were absolutely flawless!
